With certifications through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) setting the standard in craft trades training, San Jacinto College has made it a priority to develop and offer an NCCER program in instrumentation.

The program launched last fall with Level 1 courses, with Level 2 courses offered this spring. Level 3 and Level 4 will follow this upcoming summer.

“This program is designed for the construction industry and leads to a position called an instrument fitter,” said Dr. J.D Taliaferro, director of applied technologies and trades with the Continuing and Professional Development division at San Jacinto College. Taliaferro added that employment growth in this area is set to increase by 19 percent between now and 2023. Experience and continuing education via the San Jacinto College instrumentation credit program can lead one to a median salary of $30.85.

Employees may return to San Jacinto College to earn additional advanced skills in their areas of expertise. Offered on a rolling schedule, these two or three-day courses offer incremental training to workers in the field that can be put to use immediately. The latest program is Introduction to hydraulics, which covers the normal operation of fixed displacement hydraulic pumps and motors in order to accurately diagnose concerns. An Introduction to pneumatics has also been rolled out to introduce workers to air-driven systems. Intermediate versions of each course will be available soon.

NCCER is a not-for-profit education foundation that develops standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s Registry System that allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires, according to the NCCER website.

The NCCER program in instrumentation is offered through the Continuing and Professional Development division at San Jacinto College. Grants are available to individuals and companies that may qualify.
