People skills are the new soft skills. Considered among the toughest to learn and maintain, they are the foundation for success as an individual or as a company even in today’s technologically advanced world. Leading companies are investing in this critical training for their employees as competitive advantage. The San Jacinto College Continuing and Professional Development division offers training in People Skills, Management, and Supervision, and others. Additionally, the Business and Professions at San Jacinto College has training and exam prep for many of the leading industry certifications in project management, Lean Six Sigma, human resources and more.
“Many managers get stuck in an engineering or quality methodology to problems, and as good as those are, they may have trouble applying critical thinking to solve them,” said John Suarez, director of Business and Professions with Continuing and Professional Development at San Jacinto College. “Risk Management skills are equally high on the list. We excel in those areas of training as well as many others.”
San Jacinto College Business and Professions offers courses in categories that are meant to increase employees’ credentials in human resources, accounting and payroll, quality and Lean Six Sigma, management and leadership and project management. The College is a bronze sponsor of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Houston chapter. PMI is the leading nonprofit professional membership association for the project management profession offering certifications that recognize knowledge and competency, including the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification. These certifications are held by more than 650,000 practitioners and growing worldwide.
The PMP certification is one of the most sought after industry certifications globally and is rated as one of the hardest exams to pass. San Jacinto College students hold a pass rate over 90 percent. Another popular program is the Quality/Lean Six Sigma program. Conducted as part of earning certifications students have to complete real industry projects at area companies. In the past 3-4 years the student’s documented projects have save companies in excess of $10 million dollars noted Suarez.
