San Jacinto College\u00a0Deputy Chancellor and College President Dr. Laurel Williamson will co-chair the Texas Transfer Advisory Committee, a statewide collaboration to make transferring from a Texas community college to a four-year university seamless for students.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cI am honored to have been selected as co-chair of this committee,\u201d said Williamson. \u201cThe work we have done\u00a0so far,\u00a0and will continue to do,\u00a0is valuable for the more than 715,000 community college students in Texas. Ensuring that they are able to have a defined pathway from community college to university so that they graduate on time is critical for\u00a0our state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The TTAC was derived as\u00a0part of\u00a0legislation\u00a0from\u00a0Texas\u2019\u00a086th\u00a0legislative session.\u00a0Senate Bill 25 included several important provisions to improve transfer in Texas, including recommended course sequences, earlier filing of degree plans, and new reporting on nontransferable credit. To build upon the momentum created by Senate Bill 25, the\u00a0Texas Higher Education\u00a0Coordinating Board\u00a0convened a\u00a0small workgroup \u2013 the Improving Texas Transfer Workgroup \u2013\u00a0to study and make\u00a0recommendations to improve vertical transfer and the applicability of credit in Texas\u2019 public higher education institutions. From that workgroup the\u00a0TTAC was formed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Williamson will co-chair\u00a0the TTAC\u00a0alongside Dr. James Hallmark, Texas A&M University vice chancellor for academic affairs.\u00a0The committee will\u00a0comprise faculty and administrators from public institutions, with equal representation from community colleges and universities, and advising and student ex-officio members. They\u00a0will oversee and ensure consistent review of all parts of the Texas Transfer Frameworks and share information. In addition, TTAC will review relevant data, coordinate the schedule of discipline-specific reviews,\u00a0make recommendations to\u00a0the\u00a0Texas education\u00a0commissioner, and propose changes when institutions indicate that an aspect of the framework is not working. The TTAC will work under the design principles \u00a0developed by\u00a0the Improving Transfer in Texas\u00a0Workgroup.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the THECB, community colleges\u00a0serve\u00a070 percent of first- and second-year students\u00a0in Texas. Providing\u00a0a path for students who start at a community college to navigate the transfer process and earn a four-year degree is key to increasing opportunities for social and economic mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n

While there are some challenges around misalignment, unclear pathways, and insufficient and confusing information about transfer, Williamson hopes TTAC\u2019s work will provide clearer and more substantial direction and information for students and Texas public\u00a0institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe work\u00a0ahead of us\u00a0is exciting,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cWe have the pieces in place for seamless transfer opportunities in Texas, and our work will put those pieces together.\u00a0We want to understand where our students are not being successful in the transfer process and fix that.\u00a0It\u2019s about aligning curriculum and courses that make sense for students\u00a0and saving students money and time\u00a0to completing their degree.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The committee will\u00a0begin its work\u00a0by\u00a0reviewing the\u00a0current fields of study pathways. Williamson anticipates several sub-committees\u00a0comprising subject matter experts from community colleges and universities\u00a0will\u00a0determine the best transfer\u00a0solution for students\u00a0by\u00a0mapping a pathway from high school to community college to university.<\/span><\/p>\n

The committee will be a permanent standing committee for the THECB, which meets regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n
