{"id":57,"date":"2019-06-21T16:35:15","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T16:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sanjac.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2019-volume-1-issue-36\/health-professions-opportunity-grant-helps-rodriguez-reach-her-goals\/"},"modified":"2019-08-09T21:59:41","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T21:59:41","slug":"health-professions-opportunity-grant-helps-rodriguez-reach-her-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sanjac.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2019-volume-1-issue-36\/health-professions-opportunity-grant-helps-rodriguez-reach-her-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Health professions opportunity grant helps Rodriguez reach her goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\"><i>By Melissa Trevizo<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">Gabrielle Rodriguez has completed the certified nursing aide, certified medication aide, and medical office professional programs at San Jacinto College all made possible through the Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">\u201cI\u2019ve always known that I wanted to work with people and help them in some way,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI knew that the medical field was something I was interested in, but I wasn\u2019t sure what specialty or how I was going to make it happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">Rodriguez was taking phlebotomy courses when an instructor announced the HPOG grant, administered by the Administration for Children and Families and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Eligible since 2015, San Jacinto College was one of only 10 higher education institutions chosen for the grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">HPOG was created to provide education and training to low-income individuals for occupations in the health care field that pay well and are expected to either experience labor shortages or be in high demand. It boasts more than 23,000 participants nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">\u201cAs soon as I found out about the grant, I immediately went to find out more information,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI met with representatives who started counseling me on what programs would work best for me, and they encouraged me to apply.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">Applicant eligibility is based on income status, a background check, drug test, and a skills assessment test. Once eligibility is verified, applicants undergo an intake where they are randomly selected via lottery. Through the grant, students\u2019 tuition, books, and supplies are covered, but they also can be eligible for laptops, Wi-Fi access, and gas cards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">\u201cWhen I found out that I was chosen for the grant, I was so excited,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI had a baby around that time, and knowing that school was something I didn\u2019t have to worry about was amazing. I\u2019m very appreciative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">Rodriguez is currently working towards completing an associate of applied science in medical coding and billing, something that has become her ultimate goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">\u201cThrough my different certifications I\u2019ve been able to learn so much about the medical field,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI\u2019m currently a medication aide at a rehabilitation and nursing home. It\u2019s not where I want to be forever, but I\u2019m so grateful for the training I received to get me here and to help me reach my future goals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">The HPOG funding ends in September 2020, but students are still being accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Droid Sans';\">To find out more about the Health Profession
